Players

This is the section where I will look at every Manchester United player, one player in a week. So lets kick things off with the Green Giant, Edvin Van Der Saar.

Edvin Van Der Saar has proven to be the perfect replacement for Peter Schmicheal, also being the most capped player Dutch player ever with 130 appearances. He started his career at his hometown club Ajax, even scoring for them in a 9-1 victory in 97/98 season. Since, he has played for Juventus and Fulham beforing finally joining Manchester United for an undisclosed fee on 10th June, 2005.

The 6′5.5″ giant won the Best European Goalkeeper in 1995, and the Dutch Goalkeeper of the year four years in a row. Edwin has also won the Barclays Golden Glove and the Barclays Merit Award and also made it through to the Uefa Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament. He also holds the record for going the longest without conceeding a goal in league football, a feat that stretched over 14 matches and 1,311 minutes of football.

Edwin also boasts 2 Champions League medals, a hat-trick of Premier League titles with Manchester United and Eredivisie titles with Ajax.

At an age of almost 39 and injuries taking their toll on him, he’s still going strong and still holds the Number 1 at Old Trafford. However, his presence in itself inspires and teaches the young keepers coming through the ranks and its only a matter of time before we look back at his career and speak of him as a legend.
